I'm currently on 10.10.2 on both my Mac Mini and my MacBook Pro. Both seem to be running fine. Is it worth upgrading to 10.10.5 at this stage or just wait for the final public release of El Capitan. I'm reluctant to go through the update process unless it's absolutely necessary. Is there anything significant in 10.10.5 that would make it worth updating to.

If you're on 10.10.2 there isn't any reason not to update to 10.10.5. Mainly bug/security fixes and a few new features like the improved Look Up that came in 10.10.3 and trimforce in 10.10.4.

The 10.10.5 combined update should appear in the App Store as well, so either way is fine.
I just checked and the App store also shows the combined update under the updates section. It may sound trivial but I don't like the red dot with the number one at the corner of my App store icon in my dock and find it annoying so I may just update just to get rid of that.
As you probably know the combo update will delete itself when it's performed via the App Store. So if you want to keep it you'll have to be quick to copy it from /Library/Updates to another location before the installation starts.
I'm not really bothered about that. If I need to download it again I have a fast enough internet connection to do so.
Before you update make sure to backup your Macs using the built-in Time Machine utility. That way if there is a problem you can restore back your entire system to 10.10.2 as well as your apps, settings & files.
