hey! my workhorse (16gb dg late 2013) is getting old, still running great, doing daily video editing and audio work .. using it mostly as a desktop w/ ext monitor. my only machine.

I was hesitant on upgrading, until the 16' hit the market.. the i9 32gb 8gb video is tempting

still not sure if I should just search for a spec'd out clean 2015 which would be just a tiny bit better than mine but at least I'd have a backup machine.. or shoot for a used 16'

I think I'm not the only one having this dilemma?
any thoughts are appreciated, thanks!

I've been thinking the same thing. I love my 2013 and I love magsafe.
The M1 has given me pause on thinking about a new laptop.

For me, I'm going to find a 2015 as a backup and get the first 15 or 16" M1 that comes out next year.

I agree with consideration of the M1 Mini. Do you like to use an external display with the clamshell of your current Mac open?

yes I use both the mbp display + ext, and I need to travel from time to time. Interesting choice the mini, didn't know about it. But if I'd go stationary I could maybe get a spec'd out Mac Pro 5,1 and use the laptop for travelling. I think the 5,1 can still be competitive in FCPX?

thanks for your replies

I’d nix the aging MP 5,1 - its hey day passed

The mini m1 is small as can be and if only an m2 or whatever - more memory, cores, TB3 /USB4 ports.

I upgraded from a Late 2013 15" MacBook Pro (16GB RAM, 512GB SSD) to the 16" with 32GB RAM, 8GB 5500M and 1TB SSD and it was honestly one of the worst purchases I've made.

I'm in the process of shooting photos for it now so I can sell it on eBay.

I LOVED my Late 2013 MacBook Pro but the 16" just doesn't have the same magic, the display feels much less responsive, I've had horrible audio issues since buying it (and Apple says it's normal with this model), the battery feels like it dies super quickly and the heat/noise from it is genuinely ridiculous.

I'd strongly, strongly recommend getting an M1 MacBook or just waiting until they release the newly designed 16" with Apple Silicon
