I’m a grad student, so I qualify for the back to school promo and education pricing. So airpods along with a $650 M1 Mac Mini.

I presently have a 5k iMac, late 2014. Still runs fine, is in good condition. Been happy with it all these years, has lasted me longer than any other Mac I’ve owned. I’d miss it. Depending on which trade in site I use, I can get around $450 for it.

This basically means I can get an M1 for a little more than the cost of a pair of airpods (and I don’t need the airpods, so…). Plus, free financing for a year.

I have all the peripherals I need, and I’m actually trying to consolidate my work desk and personal desk, so I’m looking into a KVM switch, so I can just use the same peripherals for both computers. It would free up a lot of real estate in my house.

I use my Mac mostly for the usual casual use, grad school work (mostly spreadsheets, but occasionally something beefier like R Studio), and strategy gaming (the most taxing being Dwarf Fortress), so I’m confident that a Mac Mini would do just fine for my needs. After all, a 7 year old computer does! Man, I’ll miss it… I just upgraded the ram this winter, too.

Anyway, this seems like a no-brainer to me, does anyone see any obvious reasons not to (besides sentimentality)? Any KVM switches anyone recommends? Any particularly good trade in sites people have had good experiences with?

Went through with it. Liking my tiny little new Mac so far! Looks like sellyourmac.com has the best price for my old iMac, so I'll be selling it on there, and recouping almost the entire cost of the new Mac Mini, even before considering the freebie airpods. Might get one of those usb hubs I see a lot of people putting their minis on.

What configuration for the mini did you go for?

I’m in the UK and eagerly waiting for the 9th July for when the promotion kicks in here

I went for the base 8gb model. I had upgraded the RAM on my iMac, which I didn't really need to do for what I was using it for, so I figured I could endure a lower amount, especially with what I've heard about the M1 being much more efficient. I'm totally happy with it, but I also figure that I might just hold on to this one for a year, and get the hypothetical M2 Mac Mini next summer (I might technically have finished up my grad program by then, or maybe not), and either sell this one or hold onto it as a home server. We'll see!

Plus, I found someone on facebook who bought my old iMac for $650, so when you consider the value of the airpods and the fact that I got the free financing for the new computer, I basically made a profit (the $650 is going into my daughter's education account, so it'll be earning interest while I pay off the new computer at zero interest).

Well I heard the 16 gig is for Mac power users that leave a big program running all day, think of audio/video guys! The base 8 gig model M1 is for web or social network person only!

8gb can do pretty much any school related work that isn’t editing video, though…?
