Hey
I have the 15 inch 2017 MacBook Pro with 16GB of ram and i7
Lately I have been thinking about upgrade to the 16 inch 2021. But I'm not feeling good about it. My current Mac does its job, and works just fine.
I fell like I just want something "new".

Should I pay 900$ for this upgrade? (I believe that this is the amount I will have to add)

What do you think?

If you dont need it which it sounds like you dont. Put the $900 towards Apple stock instead as an investment. The M2 MacBook pros are probably close anyway.

If your current Mac is working just fine and you want a new Mac, I'd say wait until the M2 Pro based MBPs are released. However, if you do really need, the M2 MBP works just fine.

Another thought-
In more two years. Who will buy used intel Mac? I don't believe anyone will actually buy it. Therefore I think to go for it anyway.

I have both 2017 15-inch MacBook Pro with the same spec and the 16-inch MacBook Pro 2021.

The former still works fine, no lag, though the battery was replaced due to swollen issue.
I utilize it for office due to its portability, being thinner and considerably lighter than the 16-inch MacBook Pro 2021.

The latter is way nicer in terms of screen, especially the Pro Motion.
If I were you, I would wait for another month. Apple should announce new MacBook Pros with M2 Pro / Max during the October Keynote event.

I wouldn't assume this. There are lots of people for whom $500 is a lot of money and they just need a laptop that works OK, they don't care what name is on the CPU. They might need to run Windows, too.

However, I think the best reason to sell it soon is to do so before the butterfly keyboard fails and it will no longer be replaced for free by Apple (4 years from when first sold). Once that happens it is basically garbage (not worth replacing the keyboard).

If the 2017 is still doing fine for you, I say "hold out" until the m2 series of 14" and 16" MBP's get released. It may be several more months yet, figure anywhere from 4-8 more.

I bought 2017 14,3 i7/16/256 at a pawn shop last weekend for 300$ and I find it adequate as a desktop replacement for my needs. I was using a Dell Optiplex 7010 with 15.7 and it was fine but when I moved and got my desk setup differently, I chose to use my M1 Air as the main Mac connected to a 27" gaming monitor. It was awesome and I love it, but the lack of TB ports was annoying even with a Dell TB3 dock so I decided to transition to the 14,3 as the main desktop Mac. It runs 12.6 ok although not as good as the M1. I can see myself using this Mac for at least a year or 2 assuming that Ventura can run acceptable on it. I also like that my M1 is mobile again and I don't have to undock it to use anymore. I just bought a TB3 Acasis enclosure and it should be delivered today and I want to play around with booting off a 1TB Rocket Q.

TLDR: OP if your 2017 works, save some cash and keep using it.
