Hi, I'm new here and was wondering if I should upgrade to Yosemite. My Macbook Pro was purchased in 2011 and I am not buying a new computer. Still using Lion and I am happy but think it is time to upgrade. I use it mainly for internet, photos, email and videos. I do use MS 2008 (excel, word and PPT) for Mac.

Reading about wifi and safari issues and don't want to have those problems. Should I wait for more updates to fix these issues or upgrade now?

My iPhone 5S and iPad mini are running the latest os.

Thoughts?

Thank you.

I would go straight to Yosemite but IIRC you may need to purchase an upgrade from Lion? If so I'm not sure what the Mac App store will offer you??

Either way I would download the Yosemite installer and DiskmakerX then make a bootable USB.

Then backup your machine and do a fresh install by booting from the USB and erasing your disk then reinstalling, then use migration assistant to restore your apps and data.

Here
I would advise you look at some of the screenshots in this thread to see if you like the new UI. It seems to be controversial and very subjective. As far as performance and features, it is an upgrade.

Just to add, you should be able to go into any Apple Store now and try out the UI for look n feel on their demo machines.

Thanks all - I have an external HD so can easily backup everything on my Mac. Think I will take your advice and go to the Apple store first.

I didn't upgrade to Maverick because I didn't trust it to be problem free and have not seen the best reviews on it.

Thank you again for your thoughts and advice, keep them coming, can always use advice!! :)

Yosemite has a big change in UI, it seems to delight and disgust in equal measure, only you can decide whether it is for you.

Yosemite brings lots of new functions, most notable in being able to make and take calls using your Mac as a hands-free, the ability to manage SMS via iMessage - again you will need to decide if they are valuable to you.

Yosemite is currently at .1 release so there are still some issues, depending on your usage you may not have any issues, quite prevalent is some WiFi issues, possibly linked to the document Handoff feature causing additional BT traffic, which may interfere with 2.4GHz WiFi.

In short the last release of Mavericks would probably have suited you in terms of "problem free" and reviews.

However I am still on Yosemite and love it, it isn't causing me any issues, I like the UI and the features such as SMS via iMessage and iPhone calls I value and are very useful to me but YMMV...

Mixed reactions

There's some dissatisfaction with the appearance of Yosemite.

It's beautiful; it looks terrible!

I recommend installing Mavericks then waiting to see what happens with Yosemite.

… IIRC you may need to purchase an upgrade from Lion? …

For an upgrade from Snow Leopard, there would be a cost.

For an upgrade from anything greater than Snow Leopard, no cost.

Sorry, I missed that earlier. Results from https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1814670/ may be of interest.

I haven't had that many issues myself, not more than any other major version of OS X. If you're worried about stability, it is almost always good just to wait a bit. However, I think the upgrade from Lion will be well worth it. Lion had the worst performance of all the versions I've had since Leopard.

Regarding the UI, that's your choice. Since you're already running iOS 7/8, I doubt that the Yosemite UI will be a shock.

Hi 16Muddypaws, I upgraded my 2011 Mac Air i7 running Lion to Yosemite. I haven't been upgrading since Lion, because Lion suited me well and was very stabile. However, running iOS8 on all my devices I got interested in the new features Yosemite has to offer. Most notible handoff. Eventhough my 2011 has Bluetooth 4.0LE it is not officaially supported. I followed the instructions to run the terminal instruction and it does indeed work. Handoff is great and the main upgrade driver for me, continue with Mail, Safari and other Apps is really cool. Another thing was finally being able to use Airdrop across all devices. Firstly I did only install Yosemite on top of Lion, but I did encounter a few problems. So I decided to do a clean install to get rid of all stuff I didn´t want anymore. Everything seemd better after it, however, I do encounter the WIFI issues now. Safari is basically so slow, that I am using iPad to browse the web, on my Air is is currently unsuable and realy a pain. I am hoping for a fix very soon. Another thing coming from Lion is that for me the boot-up time seems a few seconds longer. In terms of battaery consuption I would say they are the same or a bit worse, definately I do not have battery improvements which is also a bit disappointing, since I read so much that since Maveriks the OS is more efficient and Yosemite should bring it even further. But besides the WIFI issue I like Yosemite very much, also the UI. All seems much faster and smoother compared to Lion. Currently I think it is only the question when to upgrade, not if at all. Hopefully 10.10.2 will eliminate all bugs. Hope this helps, just my humble answer.

I have no issues with the UI but I think you might have to wait a few updates, it seem to me a little buggy. I had no issues with Mavericks. unless you got ipads and Iphones(which I don't) there isn't much gain in it.
my issues include
1. mail quits downloading from Yahoo, initially it brings the mail in when setup after that nothing comes in,remove account and reinstall.
2. seems a little laggy on safari and sometimes with chrome, candy crush is laggy as hell but seems to work fine on my 2007 Imac with SL and 2 gig of ram
3. video is choppy
4. airplay will drop my wifi connection when I connect, sometimes.

mid 2012 mbp with 16 gig of ram fresh install of Lion, then a quickly upgraded to Yosemite.

From the sound of it, I think I will wait. Wifi drop off is not acceptable - at all. I need reliable wifi and I am not thrilled with a sluggish internet either. For my uses Loin has been fine. I have a report presentation to write and will need to do quite a bit of research on the web.

I will wait for more updates and also visit the local Apple store and try out Yosemite. If the look and interface make me nuts…. may wait. I hate when MS puts out a new OS and EVERYTHING changes…

This may sound funny but all I can envision is Yosemite Sam, (the root'in toot'in cowboy) and Bugs Bunny duking it out on my computer…:D

wifi is stable unless you use airplay but it is intermitten. prior to .1 I used it a day, then I tried it the next day and airplay didnt work. one person suggested modifying a plist that turned off multicast, rebooted then the airplay icon wouldnt even show up, so I returned it back to normal, rebooted and airplay worked again. later that day installed .1 airplay still worked. but the last few times I have tried it, it has not worked.

Yosemite is nothing but a new theme, it won't affect the way you use it (aside from the new features of course). Your apps still work and mostly look the same. You can argue about the looks, but it is skin-deep. Since you have both an iPhone 5S and an iPad, you'll probably like Yosemite just as much as you would like iOS.
