Let me say first that I haven't got the slightest idea about graphics cards, for me I plug them in, they work, and they get thrown out a few years later with the dead hulk of my old mac when I replace it.

I have a May 2007 2 X 3 ghz quad core intel xeon with 12gb of 667mhz DDR2 FB DIMMs (was actually impressive in its time!) I also have a black magic intensity pro card but I know so little I don't even know if you will find that relevant. So obviously no "hacks" or whatever, for me it will have to be best i can do off the shelf.

I do now want to look at upgrading my ATYX1900 card. I would like to upgrade to Lion , but as I understand my old card is not open CL so won't support it. Anyway Lion doesn't impress me much so far, but I have bought the new final cut "pro" and would like to get the new motion and compressor as well. I know I have very limited options but what are they? Is open CL possible at all. if not what is my next best upgrade option, cost is irrelevant. Thanks a lot.

The 5770 is perfectly happy in Lion, and will give the best possible openCL performance for the money on a 1,1. Probably my favorite upgrade.

if you can hold out 4-8 weeks, new graphic cards are inbound with the release of a new mac pro

even if they don't work in the old macpros or are too expensive, it will probably cut the price in half for the 5000 series cards
