I have been considering upgrading to a new iPad as they are getting closer to being a full computer replacement. I currently use an original Macbook which does what I need perfectly (other than the hard drive being too small). I also have a slew of old iPad's (original iPad, iPad2 (2 of these wifi and cell), iPad 3rd gen wifi and cell), and an iPad Air (wifi only). My son and wife tend to use their phones more and no interest in an iPad and one was my Mom's that we switched to a mini due to weight. The only iPad I really use (and not that much as I end up on my Macbook) is the iPad Air and that was from back in 2014.

What do I do with all these old iPad's? They all work and nothing really wrong with them, but Apple offers $30 for 1 of them on a trade in.

Any suggestions on what to do with the old iPads?

I use mine as digital picture frames around the house. The original iPad is the best - it has a slideshow button on the home screen that Apple removed in newer OS versions. Newer ones work great too, but you have to go to the photos app and then play the slideshow from there. Even a 16 GB iPad can hold a ton of pictures - something like 2 weeks worth of slideshow.

High quality pictures?
Most of my pictures are 2-4 MB, so let's say that's approximately 5,000 pictures on a 16 GB iPad . Then if each picture is shown for 30 seconds in slideshow mode, that's a little over 40 hours of slideshow assuming each picture is only displayed once. My 2 week estimate was a bit off...

The old non-retina iPad screens are only 1024-768, so you could use an AppleScript to scale your pictures down to this resolution (< 1MB photos) and then you could probably get up to 20,000 pictures on that first generation iPad. That would last you almost a week!
