Hi,

I just got an out-of-the-box virgin AT&T 3G from someone who never updated past iOS 2.2.1. (modem firmware 02.30.03). I'd like to upgrade to iOS 3.x or 4.0 and unlock the phone to use a non-AT&T SIM, but can't find instructions on how to do that. The dev team 4.0 upgrade/jailbreak instructions say that if you have an out of the box iPhone 3G you should restore using a PwnageTool 4.0 ipsw using DFU mode. Can anyone confirm that this also works for old iOS versions like 2.2.1 and provide more information, as I have not jailbroken a phone before and all the online instructions refer to upgrading from a very recent iOS version?

As an aside, I do have an iPod Touch G1 on 3.1.3, and iTunes 9.1.1 offers to restore my iPhone 3G from my iPod info. Is that something I can/should do before using PwnageTool 4 as described by devteam?

Thanks!
