No. The CPU on mac laptops are soldered rather then socketed to save space and weight. While in theory the motherboard supports C2D it is next to impossible to remove the original chip.

It is possible, if you have the time and the patience. I say go for it, you can get the still find Core Duo chips out there, or you can buy a Core 2 Duo. You should start practicing your soldering, as you are going to have to do a lot of it.

From what I've read it's next to impossible for a human to do it properly. Not only do you apparently have to solder all the pins simultaneously but you also have to do it for just the right amount of time or you risk melting the chip.

Unless you're a robot (or have one handy) I'd strongly advise not trying.

Thanks Dr. Buzzkill, why are you trying to smash some poor guys hopes and dreams.

I hope you're not serious. Would you rather he spends a couple hundred on a new chip only to break it, the previous chip, and quite possibly his laptop?

He asked if it was possible. I answered him... I didn't feel the need to humor him.

Unless he can solder all the pins simultaneously like panoz7 said, it is not possible. Even if it is possible to do a half assed job and maybe extend the pins, it surely wouldn't fit inside the MBP case anyhow. It is not even worth trying.

Doing a full mobo swap would be interesting but also challenging considering there are some differences between the CD and C2D models.

well, there is a company that upgrades g4 powerbooks, so i don't see why they or another company won't start offering c2d upgrades for macbook/macbook pro users.

They more than likely fabricate an entire logic board around the faster processor. It's not that hard, since I'm sure if you ordered enough IBM & Motorola/Freescale would be willing to make them, and I believe that the whole point of the AIM alliance was to share specs for the platform, so the design is most likely not a secret

EDIT:

However, for the TiBook series, there were certain models (500mhz) that were Motorola 7451's, that could be replaced with certain 7457s because they had the same pin configuration.

So, it was a simple desoder and resoder in that case. But it seems that this is not a universal trend.

This is all talking in the theoretical, of course. Like I already said before, this is not a user-serviceable endavor, let alone a cost effective endeavor.

Actually guys, stop looking, I'll upgrae your processor for you. Just send me your MBP CD and tell me which processor you want. It'll be 2000$ + tax for the 2.16ghz and 2500$ + tax for the 2.33. I'll even throw in a firewire 800 port :D

is it possible to upgrade a macbook pro core duo processor to a core 2 duo?
does the motherboard support it?

thanks!

No problem. Sell your MacBook Pro on eBay. Order a new one, maybe refurbished. That's the cheapest and safest way to upgrade.

Because your simply dreaming.

It is not possible. End of thread.

Come on Captain Emo, I am no dreamer. I just have a sense of humor.

Oh and who was it who was doing PPC upgrades a while back. They were not making their own boards, they were taking your Apple board and soldering a new processor on, that is why either you had to send in your logicboard, or send in your computer. They required a core to do the swap.
