Hi,

My Mac Pro 2006 recently failed :/

I took it to an Apple store where they said I would need to pay £380 for a new Logic Board. I don't want to pay this as there should be nothing wrong as it works in Target Disk Mode and also starts up and runs it just doesn't display anything... (yes, I have reset SMC, NVRAM and PRAM :) )

Anyway - my question to everyone is can I put a 2008 or later Logic Board in the Mac Pro 2006 case? :D

Thanks :)

Edit: (please don't tell me to pay the £££ for a new one, or pay the ££ for a new LB - I'm a student :/ )

it's easier to list things you can keep: psu, fans

other stuff is incompatible, such as ram, ram risers, and maybe even cpu cooler.
the case won't even fit because I/O has different placement.

tbh it sounds as it's your graphic card that is broken.

I'd buy a working 2008 complete used on eBay or locally, and then sell my broken 2006 for parts on eBay or locally, etc.

Isn't the 2006 a MacPro1,1? If so, you won't realistically be able to go forward with mountain lion, etc.

Try this...

Most of the Mac Pro 1,1 have Nvidia 7300 or a Radeon 1900 GPU card. The Nvidia is the black one with the passive heat sink. This is a card that failed more often then others in the past. The cheapest way would be to go for a used GPU card on ebay. Sometimes there are cheap ones around. I would give it a shot since you would not get a lot selling parts of a defective MP. An ATI Radeon 2600 would also work.

If you are somewhat skilled, you could look for a used ATI Radeon 3870 card from the PC side and flash it with a mac rom. This way you would end up with a better card that would be very cheap or sell it again if it does not work out.
