Would this be an upgrade or a downgrade? What about the screen quality and brightness?

It’s an upgrade in every respect. If you’re working in very bright conditions and using the MacBook Pro at the brightest display settings, you might notice a difference but if you aren’t there will be no discernible change in brightness.
