I have a 17" imac G4 with 1GB Memory and Superdrive. Will Tiger run on this machine without a hitch?
If I decide to sell it and get the new imac G5.. How do I restore the computer to the original condition. Leaving all applications that came with it installed.. such as iphoto, imovie, itunes, address book etc. So when they turn it on, it will be brand new.

Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

Tiger will run on that machine without a hitch at all.

Use the systems disk that came with the iMac G4, and do an erase and install installation of the OS that came with it, unless you subsequently bought a better OS / iLife and want to sell it with the better OS on it.

In any case, make sure you do a complete re-write on the Hard Drive if you're selling it so no one can get your personal information. I know it's an option on the Tiger install disk, but I'm not sure about the older OS's / system disks.

It depends on how much RAM is in the G4. My sister had a 15 inch 800 MHz G4, that was terribly slow with 256 MB of RAM once i upgraded it to Tiger. Once I upgraded it to 768 MB of RAM, it became great with Tiger. No hitches at all.

Thanks for the reply... I did upgrade from 10.1 to 10.3. I do have 1GB RAM... So
maybe I should spend $129 instead of $2000. But the new imacs are REAL tempting!! Would you do a clean install with the Tiger?

that imac should run tiger because its got a G4, but if your selling it

wait for it to ask you all the questions the ejuect the disc and turn it off

then it wil be back to the state like when you brought it

You shouldn't need to do a clean install unless you are having a lot of problems with your current Mac OS. My last install was an archive and install that way no data is lost. Once your up and running then you can delete the old file.

You should be just fine running Tiger on your iMac G4 with the amount of ram mentioned.

You could also consider a refurbished iMac G5

from Apple Store:
Refurbished iMac G5 20-inch 2GHz SuperDrive
512MB DDR400 SDRAM
250GB Serial ATA hard drive
ATI Radeon 9600
128MB DDR video memory
56K internal modem

You definitely will be able to run Tiger smoothly. I have a old G4 tower with much less ram and it runs awesome. The 1gig you have should help immensely.
