Upgrade path for unlocked 1.1.1?

I've been out of the loop a little. So I have an unlocked 1.1.1 (anySIM) and was wondering what the best path is to get it up to 1.1.4?

Sorry, no help from me, but i am in the exact same boat as you. a few months ago i knew everything about unlocking, but i have got rather out of touch and left on 1.1.1 and now really want to upgrade

should i use the new iPwone thing? or stick with something like iNdependance
 
The way I upgraded my 1.1.1 anySim iPhone was upgrade to 1.1.4 using iTunes, and then run the PwnageTool. It works perfectly, but be sure to have the 3.9 and 4.6 bootloader files on hand as you will need them if you wish to unlock your phone.
 
ahh cool, i am very tempted to do the same...


what are the steps involved in this please? and the risks too!

Pwnage Tool is the easiest upgrade path for unlockers if you're going from 1.1.1 to 1.1.4. Make sure you read all the FAQs and follow the guide to the letter. On the step when you need to get the bootloader files, you'll need to find them for yourself (just search Google) since they are technically not legally distributable.

If you have any questions, there's usually people at irc://irc.osx86.hu/iphone willing to help you.

in the guide this is said:

"ONLY use iPwner on 1.1.4

If you do not have 1.1.4 then I recommend you update to 1.1.4 using iTunes (also to familiarise yourself with the restore process) as normal then run the pwnage tool.

You can pwn your phone without restoring first from 1.1.4"

Which sentence is true?

i have just made a hacked firmware of 1.1.4 with iPwner, do i firstly need to restore to genuine apple 1.1.4, or can i restore/update streight too the apple one?

in doing this, will i loose all my text messages and the thing that has learnt my typing style?

I first upgraded to genuine 1.1.4 and then overwrote it with the patched firmware, worked for me.

There's no contradiction there. The statement are merely saying that you must be at firmware version 1.1.4 before using the iPwner portion of Pwnage Tool (or it won't work), but you don't necessarily need to do a clean restore to 1.1.4 if you're already at that version.

And you don't build the custom .ipsw files with iPwner, you build them with IPSW Builder. The difference is subtle but there, and it's a necessary distinction to make sure people don't do the wrong thing. The basic steps are as follows:
  • If you're not already at 1.1.4, get there.
  • Load the original Apple 1.1.4 ipsw with "Browse IPSW", unplug your phone from the cable and shut it down with the red slider, click "iPwner", hold the Home button on your phone while at the same time plugging it into the cable to enter DFU mode. That's the most reliable way to enter DFU mode.
  • Your phone will go through the relatively short iPwner process, then reboot to the normal home screen you had before. This process doesn't restore or update anything having to do with you data or firmware version.
  • Create a custom .ipsw file with IPSW Builder, selecting the options you want.
  • Restore your device in iTunes using the custom .ipsw file.

If your previous iTunes backups were made when the iPhone was previously unlocked, it is highly recommended that you set it up as a new phone rather than restoring from your backups. You may have to redo some settings and your custom dictionary will be lost, but you avoid many potential problems with files left over from old jailbreaks that you don't want to have to fix.

Restoring your device with an original Apple ipsw rather than a custom ipsw generated by Pwnage Tool will revert all changes made (well, not Boot Neuter changes, but any Pwnage Tool changes) and "de-pwn" your phone.

sorry, i must sound really stupid, but when updating from 1.1.1 to 1.1.4 (my phone is currently unlocked and jailbroken, with a UK sim card (US Phone))

do i alt-click update or alt-click restore? or where do i click on?

To be honest, I think you could do either one. However, even though you'll ose some of you customized data (though all your music and such will get resynced by iTunes), I would do Restore and always select "Set up as new iPhone" since its previously jailbroken.

And don't worry about the questions, that's what the forum is here for.

I have been on 1.1.1 anysim 1.1 unlocked and was not sure at the time so I used oneSIM to revert the unlock and then restored to 1.1.4 followed by pwnage
My friends iphone 1.1.1 was also unlocked using anysim 1.1 but his installer fails to open and I can't SSH into it so I found this thread.
To clarify you have been able to successfully restore to 1.1.4 without virginizubg using onesim followed by pwnage?
I can't remember but I was always under the impression that upgrading an unlocked phone would potentially brick the baseband? I guess that was only for anysim 1 or older?

Thanks for the confirmation cause I really would hate to brick my friends iphone :p

No need to virginise, just make sure you restore to 1.1.4, not upgrade.

(alt+click on restore and choose the correct firmware file --- the iPhone must be in restore mode)

this is what i did, after your friend has got to 1.1.4, just follow the guide above!

Thanks for the clarification.
I ended up digging through tons of sites and found out that his phone was low on memory as he has not relocated his app files but jampacked his unit with apps. This prevented his phone to start apps properly. At the same time his OpenSSH was somewhat corrupted as well and I fixed it by reinstalling SSH through independance. After hours of digging we gained SSH control and changed the access permission to the oneSIM folder I already loaded and was able to virginize it. If I had known this I certainly would have saved lots of time but not gained this knowledge ;)

oh trust me .. he is a happy camper now :) especially since he lost installer functionality for months
now he is scared to install too much even though I relocated all his apps to the media partition using boss tools already :D
