upgrade PB from 550mhz to 1.2ghz? Worth $ ?

I started on MR because I was a Tibook freak. I'd bought a newer DVI tibook to replace my older 400mhz (that was Daystar upgraded to 550) and I was appalled at the fact that the DVI screen on the DVI Tibooks made the letters on my pages look smaller and harder to read.

THus started an Apple evolution for me that ended up with me buying and selling machines until I've come back to a 550mhz Tibook with 1 gig of ram and a 60gig 7200rpm travelstar

I have a 12" PB with 1.25gb of ram and guess what, this old Tibook is nearly as snappy -- plus the screen is just huge in comparision.

I liked my former 14" iBook 1.42mhz with 1.5mhz of ram but I have a feeling I'm sticking with the old Tibook for the fact that the screen resolution is the same as the iBook (I think) but i sort of like the wide screen.

So, should I drop 500 bucks on a Sonnet CPU upgrade on the 550mhz Tibook to get it up to 1.2ghz?

Has anyone done this? It would be cheaper at this point than buying another 14" iBook (in a moment of feeling broke, I sold my 14").

One thing I do miss off the 12" pb and the 14" ibook is scrolling trackpad. I got hooked on that function. But happy as a clam right now on the old non DVI screen. I can see better on this Tibook than the 12" pb.

no way. save your 500 and when the time comes ebay your ti-book and go macbook!

Old, no warranty, slow buss, slow memory, max. 1 Gb RAM instead of 2 in the newer 'books.

Flog it and buy a 15" 1.5 refurb from Apple.

Guys -- what about the newer PB screens? I think they would give me the same DVI high res effect that I don't like. That's why I like this old Tibook.

Low res screen = easier for these eyes to read!

Well, if a newer PowerBook G4 or MacBook Pro will not display a resolution that you are comfortable viewing, then I guess that it might be worth the $$$ to upgrade the CPU. But for that amount of cash, I would seriously consider a new Apple laptop if I was in your shoes.

Hey thanks for checking.

You know I was almost given this Tibook (it's got a broken combo drive) -- so the price would really just take me up to around the same price as a 14" iBook new. I may or may not go for it. Just very happy to have a Tibook again with that readable screen for me.
