I have a Mid 2011 Mac mini with a 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 Gig of memory, and a 750GB hard drive running Yosemite 10.10.3. It has performed flawlessly since I opened it Christmas morning 2011.

I run MOTU Digital Performer to do small recording jobs (8 tracks or less). I'm getting into a bit of heavier work, so I'd like to add a second hard drive; a SSD to be exact.

Should it be used as the OS drive or the recording drive?

The SSD should always be the OS drive.

Agreed, it don't have to be, but it should. In fact, everything you work actively with, should be on the SSD, as you won't otherwise get the speed increase when opening/closing files.

Thanks everyone. Another question...

How are they heat wise? Do they run hotter or cooler than a traditional HD?

Well, I plan on placing two internal drives in the Mac mini chassis (which I've never done before), so I was curious about how much additional heat is generated by having a second drive in such a small form factor.
