I have just finished backing up my Mac and am thinking of upgrading the OS. I am looking for opinions on Mavericks or Yosemite. Mine is a Mac Pro:

It is several years old and the time has come. I am wondering about not just the OS but also the processor. Xeon is rather old but works fine for my purposes. Thank you for any response. TCrowe

An original Mac Pro can not be officially upgraded past Lion, but there are ways of getting around that. See https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1740775/

Mega

I clicked on the piker-alpha bootable installer link and was taken to Mega. As I am just starting the research for this I am not well versed in the nomenclature and I do not have Yosemite OS available as yet. I am not sure that the .dmg that is on the home page the link goes to is what I want or if I need to go further in the research than this. As I said, I am just now thinking that I need to upgrade as I am retired but still a photographer and I desperately need to upgrade my digital darkroom software and I do want to get the best and longest lasting OS on my Mac rather than shim it up to keep it straight.

Is the Mega .dmg what I'm looking for? If so then would it be a wise move to get Yosemite and what order should I do things in? Hadn't considered this bump in the road. TCrowe

Man, Oh, Man

I have read and followed all the links in the docs concerning the upgrade possibilities and this is way over my head. I am not a computer tech so I would have to rely heavily on this forum to ask a lot of stupid questions just to raise my confidence. That is not to mention the new graphics cards and what ever else is needed. I checked prices on a new Mac Pro and am wondering what would be the right way to go. I work all the time with photographs in LightRoom and PhotoShop and usually have 3-4 other apps running at the same time and this MacPro seems bored with the lack of use. (That's a good thing). I do need some sage advice on which way to go as I would hate to buy all the hardware and then screw up the whole shebang. Thanks for the help so far. I have some tough decisions to make. 3k for a new one I can handle but............. ad infinitum.
