Hey, I felt I just need to throw this out there and see if anyone else ever experienced this...I upgraded my 1,1 with 5355 chips so now I have a 2.66 Octo machine. Speed is great. The only issue I've had since upgrading is that when I restart my machine, it will "whirr" the fans, then 2 seconds later it will "whirr" then again, it is an endless loop. The fix is to hold down the power button until the machine shuts off, and if I press the power to boot up cold, it does the "whirr" and starts up just fine. Kind of a pain in the butt though. Anyone else ever had this happen?? Any advice would be great.

Have you tried smcFanControl?

It might be able to stabilize the fan speed if you have it in, set to your desired levels, and starting up with the machine. If that doesn't help, I have no idea. Just switched my chips and haven't had troubles.

Or, could it be that you need the firmware update for the larger cores? You can find the firmware on Apple's support areas; it's needed if you go from 4 to 8 cores on a 1,1.

I appreciate the responses, however I had already updated it to 2,1 and still same restart cycling non booting thing going on. May just have to be something I have to live with until the new Mac pros come out. ( or are the last ones out??? Hope not! )

I've upgraded my 1,1 to dual 5365s, and have done the 2,1 firmware update from netkas.org. I never hear the fans at all, and it seems to run cooler than before, so there may be some other issue that you have that's causing the fan problem.

Problem solved. I swapped out some of the ram and everything is peachy now.

EDIT: Spoke too soon.
