I have had just about every iPad since the original was released. I jumped to the Pros when they introduced them, and have had every iPad Pro version. I have always found them to be superior to the personal versions of the iPads. They always introduced something a little more innovative with each Pro. I found the 11 inch from 2018 got me the most excited. It was the perfect size, a great redesign, and the folio accessories made it closer to the functionality of a laptop.

When the 2020 pros released, I was a little disappointed. It initially seemed like too minor an upgrade. I felt like this might be the first iPad I hold off on. Then I got my iPhone 12 with the lidar scanner and found that the iPad Pro 2020 might be a little more appealing then my first impression led me to believe. This weekend is Black Friday. I typically get money off my Apple Devices through a corporate discount. On this device, it was $50 off. Apple also offered the $100 Gift Card for Black Friday. I used that towards the Smart Keyboard Folio which gave me as good a deal as I saw on Amazon and Best Buy.

I work in property management. I typically used GoodNotes to draw out informal layouts so I could draw in items in a room I’m working in. I found the Lidar Scanner can scan the room, and give me an actual layout that I could save to my photos app. I could move that into GoodNotes and draw into an actual live layout. I’m hoping vendors I work with utilize software available. Being able to drag and drop the items into these layouts will be incredibly time saving, and much more accurate. This new sensor added more value to the iPad Pro 2020 than I considered. The size and shape is the same, the screen quality is the same, there is a small speed bump to the processor, and the graphics are better. The RAM got a boost on the rest of the storage sizes, I had the 1TB version which had 6GB Ram already. I am finding the speed a little zippier in my real world experience with it. I typically sell my old devices to pay a good amount of money towards the new versions, it minimizes my out of pocket expense. I also keep my devices in pristine shape which keeps resale value high.

I’d say if I had no use for the Lidar sensor, I probably would had stuck to my guns on holding out. So far I am enjoying it a lot, of course I’m on the new device high right now and am using it a lot to get acquainting and really take in and discover the upgrades. I am also looking to get more proficient with the new iPad OS 14.

OP, thanks for sharing. Would love to learn more about this workflow with lidar and photos and GoodNotes. Would you be able to share a few images?

I will be using it this week and I’ll post screenshots. Here’s an example....
I install storage in apartment basements. Lidar scans a full image in an app like Canvas. Once it’s fully drawn, it allows you to back up into a floor plan like view. I can then screenshot that overhead image, paste it in GoodNotes, and then I could draw the spots I want to add cages. I’m going to explore more, but I’m thinking there is also an ability to measure it out, I need to find an app. I’ll post more.
