I was going to purchase a Mac mini 2014 if it had a quad core in it. I decided since it doesn't have one to just upgrade the hard drive to an SSD. It is quite amazing what a difference that has made already. I would see the beach ball animation frequently but haven't seen it since installing it.
I ended up putting in a Samsung 850 Pro. I'm not sure if that is a good choice for the mini but so far so good.
