Hello Everyone,

I'm starting a new thread, because the old one is getting to long to follow.

I've upgraded my Mac Mini 3,1 from:

2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor P7350 (Apple)
4GB of 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM memory PC3-8500 (Samsung)
120GB Serial ATA hard drive (Apple)
GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 256MB of memory (NVIDIA)

The original set-up worked great, with less CPU intensive programs like Safari, Mail and iTunes. I started using Final Cut Pro 7, Safari (multiple windows open), CS5 Photoshop, CS5 Illustrator, CS5 Dreamweaver, CS5 Fireworks, Aperture and started questioning if I needed more RAM, a faster processor, and a bigger Hard Drive.

After days of research and forum discussion, I went ahead and upgraded the hard drive (first) from 120GB to a faster 500GB and it worked great. Next, I upgraded the RAM from 4GB to 8GB and this is where the problems have started to arise. Since the RAM upgrade I see great improvements in speed and loading programs, etc- but when I watch videos from the internet (like Netflix) the entire computer freezes. I end up having to do a total re-start every time.

It works great with this set-up:

2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor P7350 (Apple)
4GB of 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM memory PC3-8500 (Samsung)
500GB Serial ATA hard drive (WD Scorpio Black)
GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 256MB of memory (NVIDIA)

With this set-up it freezes (occasionally) and Restart Needed:

2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor P7350 (Apple)
8GB of 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM memory PC3-8500 (Hynix)
500GB Serial ATA hard drive (WD Scorpio Black)
GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 256MB of memory (NVIDIA)

Any advise on how to stop the freezing? I'm past the 30 day return policy on the RAM.

Thanks in advance everyone

Thanks Giuly!
Have you used these memory sticks in your Mac Mini 3,1? And if yes, which brand? This way I don't keep frustrating you. Giuly can you help me with your response! "I guess because you didn't listened and installed some non-brand RAM instead of the branded ones, which are widely tested and cost the same. You could try to repair permissions if you cloned the hard drive, insert the Install-DVD, hold the "C"-key on the keyboard while powering on, wait until the installer came up, select your language, go Utils->Disk Utility from the top-menu, select your Macintosh HD and click the "Repair Permissions"-button. (I need copy and paste for this one…)"
Thanks in advance ; )

To anyone that has a Mac Mini 3,1 and did a memory upgrade, any advise?

Thank you in advance

To alleviate any concerns about RAM compatibility, just get it from OWC. They specialize in Mac upgrades and have good customer service.

I put 8GB into my Mini 3,1 and it works great. Got it from OWC which ended up actually being Samsung RAM that they shipped me.

Also have had good luck in the past with Ramjet RAM, which incidentally an Apple store Genius worker suggested to me.

You have incompatible RAM. Buy Mac-specific RAM and you'll be in good shape. Or you can try running one of your original 2 gb sticks with one of the Hyjinx 4 gb sticks - it may correct the timing problem you appear to be having. If it doesn't then you probably have a defective 4 gb stick.

I found out the problem. KomputerBay sent me the WRONG chips.

They sent 1 4GB (2x2GB) Hynix H5TQ2G83MFR-G7C 1066Mhz (7-7-7) and 1 4GB (2x2GB) Hynix H5TQ2G83MFR-H9C 1333Mhz (9-9-9).

I'm go to send them back for the right chip set (2) 4GB (2x4GB) Hynix H5TQ2G83MFR-G7C 10677Mhz (7-7-7).

I'll keep you posted.

Thanks to everyones help and suggestions.
