after I upgraded from 3.0.1 to 3.1 it seems like everytime i grab my phone and i'm in a bright room or outside the iphone doesn't adjust as well as it used to. My settings didn't change, the auto-brightness adjust is still on and my slider is still in the middle for brightness. Just wondering if Apple made it not so sensitive to make the battery last longer...anyone else having this issue or am I just imagining this?

3.1 is garbage. Having the same brightness issue plus random shut down needing a hard restart once or twice a day on my 3g since upgrading. Seeing lots of reports on these issues for both 3g and 3gs.

You're not the only one! I've been noticing the same issue with mine. It's nothing major, but just annoying sometimes!
It gets stuck on a certain level and is very slow to respond to light changes. And it seems to me that it dims a lot more than it used to on the same setting.
