right now i plan on getting a $1,299 macBook w/ the superdrive and thinking of possible upgrades. I would like to get a 80GB HD but it costs $50 to upgrade so i was thinking that i could just buy an HD from newegg costing $85 plus shipping, installing it myself (now that it is easy) and putting the 60GB in an enclosure or selling it off (probably selling it at this point). Also I would like to get 2GB of RAM(again, not apple installed, I refuse to pay $500), but i do not know any of the brands (my options are listed on http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...09221136+130911434&Submit=ENE&SubCategory=381
) and was wondering which everyone thought was the best (besides crucial), and I would sell the 2 256 sticks.

Just wanted some input on my desisions

Just remember if you upgrade anything and have any problems with it applecare always points out third party products as faulty first. They love to do this with 3rd party RAM.

Keep the minimum Apple RAM in case you need to send the machine for warranty service

Choose a reputable third party RAM seller who tests and guarantees compatibility with your model Mac, offers a lifetime warranty and a no-cost return if it doesn't work. Besides Crucial, MR members often recommend OWC (MacSales) and Data Memory Systems.

Thanks

First of all 3rd party RAM is as fine as any Apple RAM IMHO. There might be a lil difference but not at all to justify the price. Also RAM is so easily removable Now. You dont even need to tell them bout the ram.As for the OP I think the best advice cud be the following---

The good news is you really want 2GB inside and a pair of two 1GB sticks from Omni via Ramseeker are only $144.

NOTE: You must search for MacBook Pro ram from pop-up menu at top then click on the Omni Technologies™ Optival® PRICE of $71.99 to get the link to Omni where you will be invited to buy at that price. Any other path to there will cost you more - a lot more.

As far as upgrading the HD goes... if you are adventurous and skilled enough that you really probably don't need to be asking us the question... good luck and please post pictures! ;)

If not, be advised that HD changes on the iBook G4 are NOT easy, and you're rocking the disadvantage here that no one has really done this (opened up an MB and changed the HD) yet. So you'll be in relatively rough territory.

check out this news article just posted from appleinsider.

looks like what he was trying to say was that it's EASY now to change out the HD's in these new badboys. Not like the old method like the one I have.

Pretty sweet.

I know that apple rips off on their ram but 50$ for the hardrive upgrade isn't bad. Idk where you can find a SATA laptop HD for a great enough difference to make a valid point to DIY. If you find some please point me in that direction because laptop HD's are expensive.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822146050 $100 for and 80 gig.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822146051 $120 for a 100 gig.

I don't see you saving any money in selling the 60 gig once replaced. It will be considered used and will sell at a used price. Plus you risk damaging the HD in taking it out if not properly grounded yadayadayada. Basically what I'm saying is apple has fair prices on the HD's. Now if you were replacing it because you wanted to put a 7200 RPM drive in which apple does not offer for the macbook then damn sign me up!!

looks like my final desision is the $50 upgrade on the HD, and the 2x 1GB $71 from omni, while keeping the original ram. I'll also probably get an external hard drive, already basically know exactly which one, unless I find a better one. Once again thanks for all of you advice.

Should the hard drive replacement be from any specific vendor or can I just drop in whatever is cheapest? Which vendor does Apple use?
