I'm noticing there is a tool for controlling the fan speeds of the Mac Pro and that some people are conscious of the internal temperatures. If I upgrade my single quad processor to a 3.46 hex one, are there any concerns about heat? I don't want to cause problems if they are unnecessary. I don't do much heavy lifting with the computer like video processing and the like, but I was thinking of upgrading the processor anyway.

Same here, if your computer is in good condition, the fan control software is just to make the user feel more comfortable, which is not required for the single CPU Hex upgrade.

I did upgrade to the W3690, and quit often to let my computer run full speed 24/7 for video encoding. It can run smoothly and quietly without any fan control software.

I am now using that software now just to increase few degrees buffer, it can also further reduce fan noise by using more booster and less intake fan in my case. Besides, in case the heat sink efficiency is decreased (e.g. by the dust), I still have some extra protection. But again, it's not necessary for a good health 4,1.
