In light of Apple's pre-announcement of the new Mac Pro Tube, it seems to me that maxing out my current 2010 Mac Pro (5,1) 6-core 3.33GHz machines (two of them) will be the best near-term investment to keep me going for the next few years. After that, we can see what kind of real-world experience users have had with the new MP and see what refinements Apple adds in the v.2 of the new models.
Primary uses: Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects (and supplemental use of various other Adobe CC apps).
Upgrade plan (prices are recent approximations but may have changed):
1) RAM - 48GB (16GB x 3), probably from macdirect.com ($500 for Micron/Hynix) since OWC is now charging $640 for this upgrade kit
2) Pair of SSDs in PCIe card as RAID 0 array: Sonnet Tempo Pro ($270) with two Samsung 840 Pro 512GB SSDs ($460 x two) for media and scratch ... though I'm tempted by option of a pair of Crucial M500 960GB ($600 ea.) for twice the capacity but somewhat lower performance
3) Video Card ... replace the current ATI Radeon HD5870 with Nvidia GTX 580 3GB via MacVidCards which he lists as "still best CUDA card".
Will continue to have system and apps on separate 256GB SSD.
That's all to maximize Premiere Pro and AE performance ... would much appreciate your input to see if this plan makes sense, or if there are better/additional strategies with good bang-for-buck.
Thanks!
