Assuming I don't break my mini today with the iFixit version of data doubler kit, I'll have new/unformatted 1TB HDD and 512B SSD drives on my system. I've read many of the threads on boot-up, migration, but thought I'd double-check with some questions:

1) USB boot-up. I have downloaded the yosemite installer app (~5.5 GB) on a USB stick. I simply downloaded the file, and dragged the app (didn't open it), onto my USB (flash stick). What I'm not quite clear about is if just having this app on my USB is EQUIVALENT to having a bootable USB install drive? Do I have to do anything else? I do NOT plan on having my existing 500 GB HDD in an enclosure, but will have a USB HDD with time machine backup of the original system for migration.

2) Assuming I can format each drive, HDD and SSD, and then copy the yosemite install app to the SSD, I have some basic questions about migration assistant. Essentially, is it easier to first migrate files and programs to the SSD, and LATER move data files (music, photo, video) to the HDD? Or will I be able to selectively install, for instance, iPhoto on the SSD, but the files themselves onto the HDD? (this is my ultimate goal).

Thanks for any advice/help!
