Upgrading 2x Xeon MP 4,1. Guess what I broke.

Hello All,

I know I'm late to the game, but I finally got around to upgrading the CPUs in my MP 4,1 to a set of 3.33Ghz Hex Cores. I decided against de-lidding the processors and using the washer method. Everything was going well until I stopped paying attention. Guess what I did? Yep, when clipping the tabs on the fan wiring harness I clipped the tabs AND a wire going to the fan. Did you know a new Heatsink is ~$140 and that they offer overnight shipping for an extra $50? I do.

I got the replacement heatsink installed. It took a few times to get everything tightened enough to see all of the ram and for the fan wires to make contact, but it's running fine now.

Is it hard to do? No.
Is it easy to screw up? Yes.
Would I do it again? Absolutely.

At least you didn't break the socket pins, I know several who did. And replacing a daughter card is expensive.

Its too late but I'd rather solder the wire to the board than spending 100+ (or find someone doing it for me)

I did solder the wire, but ...
1) I clipped the wire almost at the harness so there wasn't much to work with
2) the wire is so thin I had a hard time stripping it without tearing it
3) by the time I got it soldered together the wire was so short that the harness wouldn't reach the board anymore
4) I'd live in constant fear that the fan would die at any moment.

Yes, I assume someone with skill could have salvaged the heatsink. I am not such a person.
