Upgrading 3rd Party Ram

I'm going to be purchasing a Macbook Pro 2.4 17 inch. I want to have as much RAM as possible but don't really want to pay the extra $700 for the 4 gigs RAM upgrade offered by Mac. I'm thinking of going with a 3rd party RAM for the upgrade. I talked to Mac people about this and they told me that sometimes the 3rd party memory cards can cause system problems. More importantly they told me that the upgrade would void my 1 year manufacturers warranty. I plan on getting the apple care package as well so not too sure how this effects that. I read somewhere that you could just keep the old RAM and reinstall it if you had to take the laptop in for apple care. Is this true? is there any way that they can tell if you have previously used a 3rd party RAM card?

Also curious to see what 3rd party brands you guys recomend for a Macbook Pro. Thanks in Advance

What Mac people told you that? They're lying.

I suggest Crucial, DataMem, or OWC for RAM.

My personal suggestion is Patriot off of NewEgg. I've used their RAM with no issues for over a year now.

I suggest reading through our MacRumors RAM Guide and specifically the Buying Guide as it will probably answer all of your questions. If you still have further questions afterwards, feel free to post them here.

In general though, I recommend DMS, OWC and CanadaRAM as 3rd party retailers. Installing third party RAM is fine with Apple and does not void your warranty.

what about the voiding of the manufacters warranty? is there any way around that? would replacing the memory with the original Mac memory work if I did need apple care?

AFAIK, uprading to third party RAM will not void your warranty.

No problem. And just read the last line of the first guide I posted - it's right there:

Installing third party RAM is fine with Apple and does not void a warranty. Instructions for do-it-yourself installation are on the Apple Support site and in the owners manual.

Yeah, you have to take everything they say with a grain of salt. Come here when you have any questions and as you've seen, you'll get the right information pretty quickly.

No problem - any other questions, just post them. Although I'd advise you to do a search through the Forums first, as quite often the same questions have been asked and answered many times before. Just a way you can potentially save some time.
