I will be upgrading a 4th gen ipod due to its shocking battery life and the ipod has been rendered almost useless due to a magnet (only 4gb of data can fit on it)

Has anyone done this before, if so any tips/advice?

I will be most likely buying a 4o Gb HDD want a 6o Gb (8o Gb is desirable) but i'm not sure it will fit...
4o Gb is 5mm thick whilst the 6o being 8mm thick. Does this make a difference?

Thanks :)

What sucks is that most sites are american cos i live in the U.K. and her majesty likes her money and adds a lot a lot of tax onto everything.

Looks like i'm gonna stick with the thin 4o GB HDD... Not much disappointment. Does anyone have any useful websites of U.K. stuff, without being ripped off... (i've googled and there are plenty of sites that are rogue traders)

I've got several:

--Believe they export to america (but why would you want to export from U.K. more expenseive)
They sell the HDDs mostly b-grade (refurbed), doubt they will sell a-grade stuff cos there is hardly anyone in u.k. looking for these small HDDs

--Sell all kinds of MP3s new and refurbed. Really cheap old ipod stuff

I put a 60gb hard drive into my 4th gen. Toshiba MK6006GAH which I got from eBay for about £80... fits perfectly. Those drives are a bit hard to find now.

However, the iPod is now broken due to someone  not unmounting the drive before unplugging it. Second drive corrupted now in that iPod due to stupidity and Firewire. Waiting for new models later this year before buying a new one.

God of iPODs... Well the previous Gen

I think i found the savior of the old gen ipods... Don't look the next gen ipods... CF is the way...

His name is Mark Hoekstra and he has used compact flash cards in his 4th gen ipod and his mini... I couldn't be so surprised...

Was googling for ipod mini upgrades and i came across this guy. Now i might upgrade my sister's mini, my 4th gen and several other 4th gens in my family... The cost of CF is inexpensive and this is such a viable way to do this...

As you can see i'm just kinda hyped about this and typing a lot... lol

My hat goes off for this guy, He deserves uttermost respect...

This may not be too helpful to the OP, but in case anyone else is interested, the Amazon Refurbished Store occasionally has some amazing deals on iPods, for example, i've seen 512MB shuffles for £13, 4GB minis for £25 and 20GB 4G iPods for £37 (£43 with a colour screen)! Not all of those are on their now as they sell out quick, but more are put on from time to time.

Upgrade a 4th Gen iPod with Compact Flash

Since the time of the original post, adapters to do this mod have become available. I have done this mod on an iPod 4th gen Photo, and it should work with any 4th gen. I used an 8G San Disk Ultra CF card.

The detailed instructions along with a description of the adapter you can buy is included here:
