I have OC078 and osx 11.6.4 on my main 5,1 and on a test machine. Both with AMD graphics, ssds plenty of ram. I tried running the latest Monterey installer on the test machine but was unsuccessful, it gets part way and reboots, still as 11.6.4. Is there a trick ?

If you haven't - take a look at the first post of the OpenCore thread - there is a short description in the "macOS" section of the two different methods that allow upgrades to Monterey. Otherwise I haven't seen any consistent reports of issues upgrading from Big Sur to Monterey. If you've already done that I'm not sure what to suggest.
