Hi,

I've been perusing this thread for a couple hours but still can't seem to find a definitive answer to my question:

I bought a jailbroken/unlocked iphone 3gs (ios 4.3.3, baseband 06.15.00) from someone on craigslist because I needed an unlocked phone that I could use in China. Unfortunately, I don't know which method the seller used to jailbreak it.

Now I hear that AT&T will unlock out-of-contract iphones. I'm 99% sure that the phone would be out-of-contract (I bought it a year ago, but the seller said he'd owned it for more than a year).

I want to upgrade to a new ios because since a recent upgrade of itunes, the phone hasn't been communicating with itunes very well.

I have never updated the ios because I've heard some people say that it could "brick" the phone and I couldn't risk that because I rely heavily on it for my Chinese studies. I also don't want to upgrade it and be stuck with a phone locked into use with AT&T since I'll be using it in China.

I have a few questions:

#1- If I call AT&T and ask them unlock my secondhand jailbroken phone, will they be able to do it?

#2 - Would I need to upgrade the ios before calling AT&T or afterwards? (or maybe the question should be - would I need to update the ios before or after connecting it to itunes)?

#3 - Would it make any difference if I do the upgrade while I am in the U.S. (I have no AT&T sim) or would it work when I return to China in a couple of weeks?

Thanks so much,
Kevin
