Upgrading a Mac Pro W3680 to W3690?

This probably sounds crazy, but just a thought:

In theory if I wanted to upgrade a Mac Pro 2010 (Hex-core 3.33) to the fastest CPU available for the LGA1366 socket while still enjoying the benefits of ECC, would a W3690 be the one to get?

Looking at eBay prices, it might end up only costing a few hundred dollars after selling the W3680. The experience would be nice to have too.

Then again, am I nuts and this isn't worth it at all?

You probably will never notice the difference. No matter what type of work you do.

Even if you have a 3.33Ghz machine sitting right next to an identical 3.46Ghz machine....But if you want to have the fastest CPU in a Mac Pro (single CPU) machine right now, then go for it. Basically what you are paying for is bragging rights.

If you don't already have a SSD, then I'd most definitely put that money into a SSD and see much larger performance increase.

I wouldn't.. Not worth the extra 3 percent increase in speed. w3680 is a fast enough processor. w3690 is overkill from a w3680.

Plus, w3690 is so high in price right now. You can get a w3680 for a lot less cheaper.

Sounds like a bad idea. I'd get memory or SSD or faster GPU.

Already got an Accelsior E2 (and love it).

But yeah, basically it'd just be bragging rights.

Still, curious to know what the best CPU for this machine would be.

In all seriousness though, probably the next thing to upgrade would be the video card.

w3680 - most price effective.. You could also go w3670 which is slightly cheaper, but w3680.
