Usually when I get a new iPhone I factory reset my old iPhone, power it off, and set it aside as a backup.

I'm going to be getting a new phone and this time I want to continue using my old phone to stream media and maybe play the occasional game at home. I do not want to text with it and want to ensure iMessages and texts do not go to the old phone.

I assume all I need to do is set up the new phone and then turn off Messages on the old phone, but please correct me if I'm wrong. Will turning Messages off on the old phone cause any issues with iMessage on the new one? Should I sign out of iCloud as well? Should I wait a certain amount of time after setting up the new phone before I turn off Messages on the old phone?

Since I often receive important, time sensitive messages (and need to be able to respond in a timely manner as well) I want to ensure I don't have any issues sending/receiving messages (iMessage or SMS) from the new phone and that keeping the old phone active doesn't create any issues.

TIA!

I edited my original post because it was unnecessary long. Any help would be appreciated! :)

I have several phone models that are on differing numbers, the one constant is iMessage - so whichever I am using I still get any and all messages. I set all the devices to use my main number for new messages and forward to all devices and its basically transparent to anyone sending to me. Now, phone calls are another matter...
