My MBP 15" from 2016 is starting to warp and bend, which makes it pretty awful to type on, and repairing it is $$$. I use this primarily for app design and photo editing, so I use tools like Figma/Sketch for design, and Photoshop with some photo processing plug-ins for heavy photo editing(my DSLR shoots 45MP RAW files so processing can be rather slow) and Lightroom for photo management. I rarely ever do any video editing. Pre-COVID I was traveling a lot, basically once every month, for work. I already have a company issued Macbook Pro, so I don't really need two Macs, and I've never once taken my personal Macbook Pro to a cafe or anything.

This got me thinking about getting a Mac Mini as the upgrade and boost it's specs rather than buying another laptop. I have a nice big 2K display that gets me the color accuracy and contrast I like, and when I use it, I don't really use my Macbook Pro screen for anything.

What would you suggest I buy if I go ahead and upgrade? I'm leaning towards the new Mac Mini, but I might also be swayed by the smaller Macbook Pro 13" if there's good reason. Or better to wait and see what the next 16" Macbook Pro might be?

As you already have an external monitor you like, the Mac mini M1 should be a good option. Take 16 GB RAM.

I agree, I think the Mac Mini is your best option. Especially since you said you have another laptop that you could use if you travel and you’re primarily at your desk. Also if its warped its likely that the battery is swollen and I wouldnt be using that if i were you. It’s only 199 to get a new one installed and not have it burst into flames. Lithium batteries are basically time bombs at that stage.

The m-series MBP 16" will be out around late summer/early fall.

Otherwise, the m1 Mini might do it for you, especially since you already have a display...
