Hi

I’m currently visiting the US from Scotland, and my wife is thinking about upgrading her 9th Gen iPad for a 10th Gen. I appreciate that the 10th is due an upgrade, but my wife isn’t massively into tech and I’m not sure she could justify the additional cost of an iPad Air. We could sell her 9th gen back in the UK for a decent amount, so the cost to change isn’t that much when you factor in the saving on the 10th (they are cheaper here in the US). Best Buy currently have the base model for $309, which works out at £250 with sales tax, and we could probably get £160/170 for the 9th as it is in perfect condition.

My wife played with the 10th Gen at the Apple store yesterday and she felt like it was more modern with a better screen. Would it be mad to change? I say this as somebody who has just bought an M4 iPP, but my wife just doesn’t share my need for the latest tech.

Thanks in advance.

Even though the difference between the two is minimal, I vote you treat your wife to the 10th gen. She may not notice a big difference but, the cost difference will be low and I am sure the focus and gesture for her will mean a lot to her, even if she doesn’t say much.

You might also consider an Apple Certified Refurbished Air 4 or 5 - unless the landscape front camera is important, these have advantages over the 10th Gen iPad.

The Air 4 has exactly the same processor (A14, now 4 years old) and 4GB RAM as the 10th Gen, but supports pencil 2 and has a laminated screen so is a better screen experience (the 10th Gen is non-laminated.)

The Air 5 has the M1 chip (used in the 2021 iPad Pros) and 8GB RAM, so is a considerable upgrade on the other two. Apple replace the batteries and outer shells in their refurbished products.

I was a long time user of the 9th gen and traded it in back in May 2024 for the 10th gen (base model-64GB). I was reluctant to do that because I appreciated the "classic" form-factor, but the price (and trade-in value) were too good to pass up.

Spec-wise, it might seem like a minor upgrade, but in everyday usage, it is significant. I'm surprised by how useful the USB-C port is. I bought one of those little "block" docks to plug into the iPad. It takes the iPad to a new level of usefulness, IMO.

There are also a wide variety of quality cases for it too. I use mine for casual gaming, media consumption, and productivity tasks.
