I am looking at upgrading from M1 to M4 MacBook Pro. I do a combo of general web browsing with dozens of pages and tabs open to Lightroom, Photoshop and other photo apps mostly. Since there are some good deals to be had for Black Friday (though not as much for Pros and for Airs) I was looking at 3 different specs.
My current machine is M1 Pro/16GB/1TB and I can get about $850 selling it to an online dealer. I'm using 700GB of the 1TB storage.

Looking at:
M4 Pro 12 Core/24GB/1TB $1999 ($200 off)
M4 Max 14 Core/36GB/1TB $2899
M4 Pro 14 Core/48GB/2TB $3199

To me the best option seem the $1999 option but are these M4's RAM hogs? Will I be happier in a year or two with this machine?

Anyone in a similar situation?

Thanks in advance.

Nothing about the chip changes RAM use. The mix of software you use will determine your RAM needs. If you’re well served by your M1. Then 24GB is plenty.

I went with the M4 Pro 12 Core/24GB/1TB $1999 ($200 off) from B&H with their Payboo card so save $166 in tax I figured it's the best deal and I'm on it right now.
