So my original iPad air from 2013 is slow but still working. The biggest problem is with Facetime, it drops and freezes after few minutes so I finally decide to upgrade.

After tons of Youtube comparison videos and browsing the posts here, I am still torn between the base model of iPad air 4 with 64gb, or iPad pro 11" with 128gb.
---For iPad air 4 I can purchase using the educational price at $549, factor in the Target gift card deal and trade in my old iPad($75), the final price plus tax is around $400.
---For iPad pro, I will wait for the Apple 4 day event, so the price will be $799 minus $100 gc from Apple/trade in/the target deal, the final price plus tax is around $535.

In the past I only use my iPad for web browsing, media consumption and FaceTime/Zoom, so I feel like Pro is overkill. I don't plan on getting magic keyboard or Apple pencil now since I don't feel like I have the need, but I am not sure if down the road I might need them? As for storage, 256gb is definitely too much for me, and I think I can do ok with 64gb as well since I use iCloud for my phone/video storage and I don't download too much movies into the iPad. But considering the last iPad has lasted me 7 years, I feel like spending $135 more on the pro version might worth it, in case of all the new IOS updates in the future might eat more storage, then bigger size might come handy. And maybe iPad pro can last longer? not sure.

What do you guys think?

You won’t anything wrong with either choice. How much data have you used on your iPad currently? Double that, and then go for the size that’s closest to that I’d say!

My current iPad is only 16gb, which is tight. I don’t install any apps that I don’t absolutely need, and I don’t download any movies on it(which I do wish I have more space for that sometimes). My phone(iPhone 11)’s storage is 64gb and my usage is at 50gb now. If I need more storage on the iPad than 64 I would definitely just get the pro, since air 256 is almost same price as pro 128. But for now I feel like 64gb might be enough?

I'm gonna go against the grain here and recommend the Air 4. For the same price, you get double the storage and the newer generation processor. Yes, people will argue that the A12Z outperforms the A14 in multicore benchmarks and the pro has "blah blah blah". But based on your usage, you don't need the benefits or extra addons of the pro, and the A14 does better in single core tasks like you'll be using it for. For the same cost as a base 11" Pro, you'd get a fast and beautiful Air 4 with double the storage. You say you don't NEED it but it would be nice, then I say go for it and enjoy having some movies on there. The new Air's are lightweight, have the same laminate screen, and come in a variety of great looking color choices. You wouldn't be disappointed one bit

I also have the original iPad Air from 2013. I use it for FaceTime a lot and I’m not having the same problem as you.

I recently got the current iPad Air and the only thing that I don’t particularly like about it is the Touch ID. Because I have discovered I like using the iPad in a stand with a keyboard and mouse and it’s irritating me to keep leaning over and touching the top button after I have woken up the iPad by pressing the space bar on the keyboard. Maybe I should have got the Pro.

This isn't an issue for me on the smaller iPads since I tend to use those almost exclusively in tablet mode.

If Apple had released 12.9-inch model with TouchID similar to the Air 4 though, I'd definitely skip that and stick to the iPad Pro with FaceID.
