Upgrading Hard Drive

I want to upgrade from a 80GB to a 250GB drive.

A few questions...

What will happen the first time I turn it on with the new drive because the OS will be on the old one and my settings, files, etc.?

Do I install with the OS discs and then drag my files, or what would be easier?​

What should I do to put what was on the former drive to the new one?

I plan on keeping the old one and using it as an external drive​

I also have another external drive that has my movies on it (500GB) that can be used to help with this process​

What I would do is make a bootable copy of your current internal drive and put it on your external. This will make transfer earlier plus protect you if (god forbid) you accidentally damage to old drive when removing it. SuperDuper! does this well.

I believe after that all you have to do is boot to the OS DVD and install on the new drive. Then, in the initial set up options, choose to transfer your files and settings from the external.

One solution is to use an app like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! – although the latter isn't fully Leopard ready yet.

Basically, pop your old drive into an external Firewire/USB enclosure and clone the contents onto the newly installed drive in your Mac.
