Upgrading HD, Which Brand?

Hello, I am upgrading my MB HD. Which manufacturers are the most reliable, quietest?
I am looking at the 160gb - 200gb range.

Most would recommend Seagate. Due to their 5 year warranty.

Since you say quietest Seagate would be the go; if you had have said fastest you would get a different response.

The problem is that Segate doesn't have anything larger than 120 GB for the MacBooks (2.5" S-ATA) at the moment (as far as I know).

That is why I'm ordering a 200 GB Toshiba disk tomorrow (the MK2035GSS 200GB 4200rpm SATA 2.5" to be exact). When the original disk on my MacBook died just before Christmas, it was replaced (under warranty) with a Toshiba disk, which seems just fine.

Ok, so the 200GB is a bit more expencive than the 160GB (which is also a 5400 disk), but since I already have a 120 GB and need space more than speed (even if tests has shown it to be just as fast in ordinary use), I'm going for the full 200...

According to Bare Feats anyway, the Hitachi is the fastest, but the Seagate seems to be the quietest in the MacBooks. Toshiba makes good mobile HDDs as well. Good luck with whichever way you decide to go.

I am doing the same thing, but aso upgrading my Mac Mini so it can serve as an "Apple TV"/media server. Including SHiping, I got the OEM Western Digital Scorpio 160GB for $110. I have always been a dedicated Hitachi guy for portable drives, but the WDs have been getting great ratings for speed, power, and durability.

My gut says Seagate, my wallet says Western Digital, the middle ground seems to be Hitachi or Toshiba. I'm watching a couple on eBay now. Cliff I was watching yours, but elected to go for more capacity.

i wouldn't go 200gb just yet. that will be awfully slow being a 4200 rpm. i would stick with hitachi. check newegg. i think you can find a 160gb for $120.
maybe by the end of the year they'll have 200gb s-ata 5400 rpm hd's.
