upgrading iphone 2G to 3GS

I am thinking of ugrading Iphone to 3GS and I am eligible to upgrade.

I have a question.
if I order iphone from AT&T Store or website, I can get it for $199 plus tax but If I buy iphone from apple store (DE), I can save Tax.

my question is
Does apple store sell iphone for $199. how does it work?

Why would AT&T charge you state sales tax if your state does not have sales tax?

In any case, I would always recommend buying from an apple store if there is one nearby. I bought my wife's 2g at an AT&T store...2 days later vibrate stopped working, and AT&T made me go to apple to get a refurb. If I had purchased it at apple, I could have walked in and got a brand new replacement.

I don't live Delaware but when I travel, I stop by Delaware to buy expensive electronics to save Tax. usually I go to the shopping mall at I-95 where the apple store is. I got two 2g iphone at Delaware apple store and saved about $60.

at that time, I bought the phone at $399 each then activate the phone at home but the situation is changed because of AT&T subsidized iphone.
I don't know if I can buy the upgrading iphone at apple store for subsidized price of $199.
 
I think it's really strange that you add tax on top of the advertised price in the US! It must make it sooo difficult to see what you're actually paying. Why can't they just do as we do in the UK and advertise the actual price you pay, inclusive of taxes?

I thought Apple store only sells $399 for non-contract iphone and new customer for $199.

I am not sure how does it work.
my guess is if I activate upgrading Iphone at the apple store, they automatically charge for $199 (because I am eligible for the ugrading 3GS).
 
Apple communicates with AT&T when you're in the store. If AT&T says you're eligible for the $199 pricing, that's what you'll get.

Because we don't have a national sales tax...we are 50 united, but separate states with strong state governments that determine what if any tax should be applied to sales. The VAT doesn't really fit with the current American mentality. We would rather have a confusion price structure.

Because sales tax varies amongst the different states and AT&T would neverwant to advertise with uneven numbers. IMO it's a pain in the ass but make sense to me....

Apple uses the same price guide as AT&T, Apple checks directly with AT&T what ever plan you are eligible for will be the same with both AT&T and Apple and both will charge sales tax based on your state laws. in Michigan I was charged 6% on the purchase price of $299 32GB 3GS 6% sales tax I paid 17.94 total price with Tax 316.94 check your state tax laws some states like California tax the entire amount $599 plus 8% sales tax 16GB model. but both Apple and AT&T prices are the same and tax based where you live.
