iPhone Upgrading iphone 3GS (jail broken) - 3.1.3 to 4.0

Hi

I have a jailbroken iphone 3GS version 3.1.3 (7E18) with 05.12.01 firmware.

How do I upgrade it to a higher version 4.0 or higher? Also please suggest which version would be the best for this jailbroken phone.

Chambone is right. Apple is still signing iOS 4.1 for iphone 3GS.

till now Apple has released iOS 5.1.1 for iPhone 3GS and it is good for iPhone 3GS. You can update to iOS 5.1.1 easily.

Moreover if u depend on the unlock then simply use any JAilbreaking Tool to make a custom IPSW and preserve the baseband. u can use sn0wbreeze and Redsn0w for custom IPSW
 
could you please let me know what i need to do - i have cydia on my phone - last time my friend helped in jailbreaking, now i need to do it myself....so if you can give me the link to easy jailbreaking, would be helpful
 
I was reading one of the posts and it said there is some issue with 5.1.1 is it advisable to upgrade my jail broken ph to tht version???? With version 4 I won't be able to install Facebook app as it requires 4.3 or later version :(

Please help
 
Just go with 5.1.1 but before that save the shsh blobs of the current version if cydia didnt do it ;) if u have shsh blobs saved for different versions u can go on when ever ;) with ifaith or redsnow ;) good luck
 
ios 5.1.1

download redsnow 0.9.14b2 and custom ispw 5.1.1
go to redsnow extras-custom ipsw this will create a cusotm ipws which you can restore using itunes.

go to itunes press shift and select restore and choose the custom ipsw created by redsnow.

After restore go to jailbreak. select both cydia and downgrade to ipad baseband.

Go to cydia and search for rocky raccoon for unthered jailbreak.

install ultrasnow from cydia for unlock if your phone is networked locked. this step may destroy your push notifications on your phone.
 
A cellphone repair agency in India says they can factory unlock the iph 3GS. Is it possible to do that? Or does a jailbroken phone have to be jailbroken to upgrade the OS.
 
The agency says that they will contact AT&T and get the phone factory unlocked. Is that possible?
