i want to update my jailbroken iphone from 2.1 to 2.2.1, but i do not want to have to resync all my music, re-download all my cydia related items, or any similar things. last time i tried following a guide on this step by step, i got screwed over and ended up losing 500mb of disk space and having to resync everything. horrible experience.

too bad. You have to do all that stuff anyways. It something that comes with jailbreaking. I think you should consider aptbackup for next time. It will save you a lot of trouble.

thing is, i tried aptbackup last time, and it didnt work. i installed it before upgrading, pushed the backup button, made a new backup in itunes, updated firmware, jailbroke, installed aptbackup again, hit restore, and nothing happened.

Did you set up as a new phone or did you restore from a previous backup? If you set it up as a new phone it won't work. It has always worked great for me. :D

obviously restored from previous backup.
i really do not want to **** up this time...i have too much stuff to lose

try appbackup if aptbackup didn't work for you. But having everything erased is something that happens everytime you upgrade/rejailbreak. It can't be avoided. There aren't really any new features on 2.2.1, you might as well just say on 2.2 if you are so worried.

im on 2.1, only reason i want to upgrade is because no apps from the appstore work with 2.1. i have 13gb of music which is why im making such a big deal about it

looks like i have no other choice...
do you know of any decent guide to just update from jailbroken 2.1 to jailbroken 2.2.1 in that case?

mmk thanks for the help :) ill hopefully post my success story tommorow :D

just wanna get this straight.
first i should go into itunes and click update? wont that make me lose 500mb of space?

woot just did everything and i didnt even have to resync my music! all was flawless, perfect. had to install a few cydia things but its all good!

Err, so I'm a little confused. At the start of the thread you make it sound like you have to re-sync everything after updating from jailbreak to jailbreak firmware, but then at the end you sound like it's easier than that. Can I just go from JB 2.2 -> official 2.2.1 -> Quickpwn it to JB 2.2.1 without having to load everything back up?

I was going to skip doing 2.2.1 since it seems minor, but a few app updates I have are requiring 2.2.1 now, grrrr.
