I purchased a C2D MBP last fall and because of the extra $500 or so for 3GB chose to go with 2GB. I'm sure memory has gone down in price some and most of all it's cheaper to buy elsewhere than Apple.
My questions:
Since I have 2GB of memory would each slot be filled up requiring me to purchase one 2GB stick to use with one of the 1GB sticks already installed or would it be just one 2GB stick allowing me to get a 1GB stick to add to it?
Is this something that is easily done by the user?
Most of all, what is the best memory out there? I want a reasonable price but don't want to buy anything that will cause stability issues.

## Check out OWC (Other World Computing) and crucial.com. Also...dealram.com is a good source of info, etc.

I'm thinking of getting the one in this link:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145172
My question: Is it safe to pair that with one of the 1GB sticks in my machine or am I better off getting the matching version of a 1GB stick from Corsair?
As well, I know this will mean my memory is no longer dual channel but is it true that the extra 1GB far outweighs the loss of dual channel?

Looks like this question has been asked multiple times and ways in this thread, and not really answered?

If I have 1gb memory in my C2D mbp, cant I just add another 1 gb stick to the empty slot to achieve 2gb? Do I have to buy another 1GB + 1GB pair?

I am looking at Crucial if it matters.

Thanks

Yes, if you have 1GB in there already 1GB + 1GB = 2GB.

This does not necessarily mean you will get the 'dual channel' speed bonus (which apparently isn't that much) but if you read the specs of the ram you have installed, and the numbers and codes are the same as on the one you intend to buy, it should be fine.

I bought a 1GB stick from Crucial for my G5 iMac, its been great so far, don't worry about buying from them.
