I was looking at buying an SDD for my mac mini 2011 model and was curious as to how I get lion on the SSD after it is installed?

If no one responds, I suggest looking at any one of the many other threads (some on this page) where this question was answered.

I'll answer you. Get Carbon Copy Cloner (Free).
Plug your new SSD into a USB or firewire enclosure.
Make a clone from the internal HD to the SSD.
Take old HD out.
Put new cloned SSD in.

Boot.
Done.

on your mid 2011 mac mini there is a lion recovery partition. apple provides directions on how to copy this to a usb flash drive. so do that. install your SSD and then use the flash drive to install lion.

alternately, purchase the dual hard drive kit from ifixit, and just install the SSD as an extra drive. then you could boot to the recovery partition and install lion directly (this is my favorite answer).
