My office may be getting rid of a 1st gen Intel Mac Pro. It's a dual proc 2.0GHz dualcore (PacPro1,1). I've been looking around, it seems like I can get a pair of LGA 771 Quad procs for 200$

Will these work in a 1st gen Mac Pro? Research turned up info on all the 2008 and later machines, but I couldn't find anything on the original.

Thanks for any advice.

Yes. They will work. You can use any of the Clovertowns in the macpro1,1.

But you may want to see if you can find some E5345 for not much more than that price. I got a pair for $280 and that wasn't an outstanding price. That would give you 2.33GHz rather than 1.8GHz.

I did an upgrade on the my Mac pro 2Ghz. Put 2.33 quads in it. Made a big difference. If you can afford higher ones, do it. Keep you from upgrading again later. Also, after the upgrade, install smcfancontrol. Your temps will be higher.

Thanks for the advice. If I can get them to part with it for a reasonable price, I'm totally upgrading it to a dual quad then...

A pair of 5345s just went unsold on eBay for $240 USD. I almost pulled the trigger on them myself, but I still kind of want 5355s since it'll keep my 2.66 clock speed for single threaded stuff. If I don't find a sweet deal on those soon though, I guess I'll be joining the 2.33 camp.
