Whenever I've upgraded to major releases I have always formatted my iPhone and did a fresh install from an ipsw. However I am thinking of just doing an over the air update. Is there any benefit to doing the fresh install through iTunes or should I just save myself some time and effort and just do the ota? Thanks.

Fresh install really can only help if you're having issues.

Personally it's been years since doing one manually. (I think iPhone 4 was the last time I did one) I've just done OTA and the only time I "get" a fresh install is when I upgrade to a new phone. I've never had an issue with OTA, but some do.

I would say if you want to save, time do OTA, there's no harm in it.
