I have a Macbook Pro - late 2016 a1708 model. The RAM failed in the machine last week and Apple have advised that I need a new logic board - as the faulty RAM is soldered to the current logic board.

Currently, the RAM is 8gb, but can I buy a replacement logic board with 16gb of RAM instead, so that I can give my machine an upgrade? Making the best out of a bad situation.

I didn't know if buying the logic board with the larger RAM would mess with the other components in the machine.
Any help would be gratefully received. Thank you!

No I don’t have apple care, and the macbook is only 2.5 years old before the hardware failed.
Don’t get me started, I was so disappointed, I’ve only just calmed down and accepted I’m just going to have to put my hand back in my pocket to repair it.
I think I can find a replacement logic board for about £300.
But can I install one with the larger RAM?

Just make sure your replacement logic board is the same model series and not a different model.

I have done tons of logic board replacements and yes as long the model series is the same, yes it is very possible.

Make sure you get the appropriate specialty tools from IFIXIT.

Thank you so much for your advice! I really appreciate it, thank you all!

I have to ask:
How do you know the RAM "failed"?
What are the symptoms?

Well it came to a shuddering halt one afternoon, with nothing responding - so I shutdown by holding the power button and the. it would never restart - just kept the apple logo and progress bar up.
Applecare tried to assist but the hard drive couldn’t be erased so they advised me to take it to a genius bar.

They ran some tests and these diagnostics showed the RAM had failed the Knaizuk Hartmann Test and Bit Checkerboard Test. These results confirm a RAM issue.

Wow. First time I see RAM failure in a Mac. Especially after 2.5 years. RAM failure is usually either within the first few weeks of usage or at the very end of the product’s life.

You are really out of luck.

OP:

Can you boot to internet recovery (NOT to the "recovery partition")?????

Try this:
Press the power on button and immediately hold down
command-OPTION-R
You'll need your wifi password.
It could take a while for the utilities to load.

Does this work?

No unfortunately that doesn’t work. I tried that with apple care, and that’s when they realised the problem was hardware when we tried to erase the drive in internet recovery mode and it came up with an error message saying ‘denied.’
