Ok, I'm considering upgrading my RAM from 2GB to 4GB because I have handbrake constantly running and for some reason, Safari is so slow and laggy and I just think it could do with a performance boost (my system as a whole) I only have Handbrake, iTunes, Safari, Mail, Adium and CoverSutra open and it's slow and jittery.

So, if I have 2 1gb sticks of stock ram from apple, how much do I order from wherever? Because are there only two slots or what? How does it work?

Where is the best and cheapest place to buy ram in the UK?

And, what happens if I get bad ram? What does it do? Will my system completely die if I get bad RAM?

Thanks :)

This doesn't answer a couple of my questions...

If I have 2x1gb sticks, then do i need to buy 2x2gb or are there more than two slots?

Where is the best place in the UK for ram.

Thanks for the guide though :)

If the Alu (which I assume you have) is like the white, then yes, there are only 2 ram slots.

There are two slots yes and you will need to use 2 x 2gb for best performance (2 x *gb) as it most use paired ram.

Please do check that your system supports up to 4gb also as some older intel machines only supported up to 3.

The procedure on all macs (bar Mac Mini) is extremely easy.

iMacs it is located beneath the screen in the grill. One little screw to undo then use the tabs to pull it out.

Both laptops are located under the battery, there is a small metal piece that covers it (i think has 3 screws in it) which is located around the battery enclosure.

Thanks for the help everyone, I'm on a alu 24" iMac and I noticed the RAM slot a while ago, so when I buy this new RAM, I'll have to buy 2x2GB and then just leave the stock from Apple out? Just to confirm.

Thanks :)

Yes, take both old sticks out, put in both new sticks, and voila! 4GB. Search YouTube for replacing RAM in an iMac. They have several to watch. It is a simple operation. RAM brands that offer lifetime warranties are Crucial and OWC (that I know of).
