Upgrading server 10.5 to 10.6 is it possible without wiping the drive?

I was wondering wether i had to wipe my mac pro's HD before upgrading or can i just do a direct upgrade. thanks for all your help...we've had some major problems with cross compatibilty.

I'd probably try a simple update instead of a clean install.

And considering that you've got a decent backup of your system (right? ), it shouldn't be a problem if that goes wrong. You can still do a clean install in that case and migrate your data from your backup.

whats the risk if there isnt a backup?

You're not telling me that you don't have a backup, do you?

Risks involved?
Data loss, business disruption, loss of business.

Seriously, if that machine is a corporate server, back it up! Backups in enterprise environments are even more important than for private users.

its a high school based server...the classes would lose all their work

Is that important data now or not?

If it is, backup the server before updating to 10.6! And even after the update, keep backing up the machine if you want the classes to keep their work if your hard drive or machine dies.
