Does Apple normally offer BTO style upgrades at the Genius Bar for machines that were purchased days, months, or weeks earlier?

If the 6 core standard model is available day 1 and BTOs ship much later, I'd consider getting the 6 core model if I could upgrade the SSD and GPUs in January.

My guess is they will probably offer this service but would not refund $ for the replaced components?

You could order a bto one and if the delivery estimates is end of January you could always buy a stock one to hold you over and then return it when yours arrives.

I highly doubt they will be offering an upgrade service tho

The SSD is user upgradable, I'm sure the genius bar would do it for you.

I haven't heard a yes or no on the GPU. I hope we find out soon.

the problem with that one is that i think we'll find out soon how easy it is to take it on/off.. if it turns out to be easy, we still have to (probably) wait a while to see if apple is going to be selling gpus separately.

i personally think both will happen (easy & buyable) but i'm definitely not going to advise someone to make a decision based off this :)

The GPU cards share the machine's unified heat sink. That means swapping GPU cards will almost certainly require removing and then reapplying thermal paste. That's not exactly rocket science, but it's hard to imagine Apple would consider a part that required it to be user-replacable.
