Upgrading the OS on a mini server ?

I have a mac mini server running OSX server 10.6.8

It has 2 internal drives and no optical drive.

I have no need to run the server OS any more and want to install and run Mountain Lion on the boot disc. I tried to install Lion a few months back but the App store wouldn't let me stating I needed to install Lion server so I didn't bother.

Can anyone kindly tell me the best and easiest way of doing this. I was thinking of cloning the boot drive onto the 2nd internal drive then formatting the boot disc and then (from the cloned disc) downloading ML and installing it on the reformatted boot drive but not sure whether this would work as the App store would still see the cloned disc as a 10.6.8 server.

Is there a way?

I think that with Mountain Lion it doesn't care that you're running Snow Leopard server. I was running Lion Server and there was no problem buying Mountain Lion. Give it a try.

Mountain Lion should install fine. Remember that the Server component is now just a separate app on the app store.

So, if you DID want Mountain Lion Server, you'd need to buy Mountain Lion for 19.99 and then Server (for Mountain Lion) for another 19.99.


I just upgraded my mini from Lion Server to Mountain Lion without issues. I don't use the Server functions.

Thanks guys. It's letting me download ML now so it should be ok as it wouldn't let me download Lion originally.
